Many people don't think about calling a locksmith until they are locked out of their home and need to gain access. In truth, there are many services that your local locksmith can offer, one of the most important being to change all your locks after you move into a new home.

Why change your home locks?

After you move home you probably have many different things on your mind. You need to unpack all of your belongings. You probably want to do some redecoration and to ensure that all of your household services are connected as soon as possible. Maybe changing the locks on your home is a long way down the list, but it really shouldn't be.

If you decide not to change the locks to your property then you have no way of knowing how many people may have access to your home. The previous occupant may have given you their set of keys but that is very unlikely to have been the only set in existence. It is probable that there were at least a few extra sets of keys cut and passed on to friends and relations. You don't have possession of those keys so all of these people now have access to your home. That presents a serious security issue. Calling the locksmith to change the locks on your home is the easiest way to ensure the security of your family.

Other reasons to think about changing your locks

When you call the locksmith they will be able to advise you on many security related issues including the security of your locks. If you live in an older property it is possible that the locks on your doors and windows may not meet the current requirements of your insurance policy. Your locksmith may be able to arrange the fitting of key operated window locks, and proper mortise locks where appropriate to bring your home up to standard.

While you are having your locks changed why not consider the advantages of having a 'same key' system fitted? Having one key that fits both your front and rear doors is very convenient. You need to carry less keys with you, you don't have to pay out to have additional keys cut for both doors for your relations, and should one of your door locks ever fail you can always be sure of gaining access to your home through the other door.

Talk to your locksmith today and they will be able to advise you on the best course of action for you.
